Start Your Recovery Journey Today

The decision to seek treatment is a big step, but you don’t have to do it alone.

therapists olds up two fingers for patient in emdr therapyFor many of those who struggle with addiction, trauma is a contributing factor or underlying cause. Traumatic experiences can have lasting impacts on a person’s physical and mental health, making it difficult for them to overcome their addiction and move forward in life. From physical and emotional abuse to the loss of a loved one, trauma can be experienced in a variety of ways. However, there are therapeutic approaches that can help people process their trauma and heal from it. Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence-based, non-invasive approach that can be an effective part of addiction treatment.

Lasting recovery is possible. Working through trauma and developing healthy coping skills can promote sobriety and a life of joy, peace, and stability. Reach out to Calvary Healing Center at 888.492.5113 to learn more about our addiction therapies, including EMDR therapy, and how we can help you or a loved one recover.

Understanding EMDR Therapy

Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of psychotherapy that aims to reduce the intensity of distress associated with traumatic memories. It involves a therapist guiding the patient through various activities to help them recognize, process, and heal from traumatic events.

During an EMDR session, the patient might be asked to follow a moving light or their therapist’s fingers with their eyes. As they do this, the patient will be asked to think about a traumatic memory and talk about any thoughts or emotions that come up. The therapist can then use a variety of techniques to help the patient work through their feelings and heal.

For example, the therapist might ask the patient to pick out a positive phrase or image that can be associated with the traumatic memory. This process helps to rewire their brain and helps them to begin to associate the traumatic memory with more positive emotions.

Why is eye movement a part of EMDR therapy? Eye movements are thought to engage both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, allowing information to be processed more quickly and thoroughly. During EMDR sessions, eye movements may also help to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, allowing the patient to talk about it more easily and ultimately heal from it.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy for Addiction Treatment

EMDR therapy can be an effective part of any addiction treatment plan. By addressing the underlying cause of the addiction, such as trauma, EMDR therapy can help a person overcome their addiction and learn healthy coping skills.

Some of the benefits of EMDR therapy for addiction treatment include:

  • Promoting healthy emotional regulation, including improved anger management skills
  • Building skills to deal with triggers and cravings
  • Developing healthier coping strategies to handle stressful situations
  • Providing a space for participants to process and heal from the traumatic events that are causing their addiction
  • Helping patients gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
  • Encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their actions
